CAPTRUST’s employee-run CAPCommunity Foundation wrapped up its 2013 fundraising campaign with a record-setting donation to Wildwood Hills Ranch. Established in 2001, this 400-acre facility just south of Des Moines, IA, exists to transform lives and strengthen communities by providing healing, hope, and unconditional love to children and at-risk youth. Donations to Wildwood are used to support free summer camps and year-round retreats offered to children ages 8 to 18, where they are immersed in a fun and safe environment where character, leadership, and teamwork are modeled and taught.
Wildwood Hills Ranch has been a philanthropic focus of CAPTRUST Financial Advisor AJ Shimp from the firm’s Des Moines, IA office for over 10 years. “One of the most impactful things about Wildwood is that its commitment to a single child in providing leadership programming and other camp events that teach these kids how to become productive members of society, spans a 10-year period for each child. Very few other organizations make that kind of long-term commitment to at risk youth,” says Shimp.
Wildwood Hills Ranch was selected by CAPTRUST employees to be the foundation’s “big fundraiser” for 2013. Throughout the year, CAPTRUST associates participated in fundraising events for the ranch, including auctions, raffles, golf tournaments, pancake breakfasts, trivia contests, and even assembled a team of CAPTRUST associates, friends, and family to run the Tuna Run, a 200-mile relay race from Raleigh, NC to Atlantic Beach, NC.
“We are beyond impressed and humbled by the collective effort of CAPTRUST employees across the country who came together to help the at-risk youth we serve. Their unprecedented efforts enable us to further our mission and, in very real terms, will allow us to reach 57 new children,” says Al Lorenzen, CEO of Wildwood Hills Ranch.
The CAPCommunity Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) charity, was organized in 2007 to provide CAPTRUST employees with formal opportunities to participate as a group in community outreach efforts. “The goal of the CAPCommunity Foundation is to promote engagement in the communities we serve by encouraging and organizing our teammates to contribute time and resources for local charities,” says Isaac Buck, CAPCommunity Foundation President. One hundred percent of the funds raised by the foundation come from the more than 280 CAPTRUST employees who can contribute directly through payroll deduction (CAPTRUST matches those contributions dollar for dollar) or participate in fundraising activities to raise money. “Nothing makes me happier than to see CAPTRUST making a difference in the lives of children.” The CAPCommunity Foundation supported over 71 organizations during 2013.
For the new fiscal year, the committee has chosen the Ronald McDonald House as the recipient of the funds raised during the 2014 campaign. The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is to create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children.
