Each September, PLANADVISER conducts its proprietary Retirement Plan Adviser Survey, which is later used to compile the Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers list. According to PLANADVISER, “this list includes advisers who reach the top of their respective peer groups in terms of assets under advisement (AUA) or number of retirement plan clients, including defined contribution, defined benefit, and nonqualified plans.”
This year, CAPTRUST’s Texas-based Michael Maresh and Pennsylvania-based Scott Wertheim were named to the Top 100 list’s subcategory of “Individual Advisers With $1 Billion or More in Retirement Plan Assets Under Advisement.”

The National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA) has honored ten CAPTRUST advisors on its 2018 Top Women Advisors list. Launched in 2015, this list aims “to acknowledge the contributions of a growing number of women who are making significant contributions to the retirement industry, as well as bringing excellence to the profession,” according to the publication. This year, nearly 500 nominees were submitted for this list.
Based on their tenure as a financial advisor or their role within a firm, honorees are separated into three list categories—all-stars, captains, and rising stars. This year, CAPTRUST’s all-stars include Beryl Ball, Deanna Bamford, Patricia Bills, Karen Casillas, Susan Clausen, Heather Darcy, and Jean Duffy. Additionally, CAPTRUST’s Devyn Duex has been named a captain, and Erica Blomgren and Abigail Russell have been recognized as rising stars.
Four of these women—Beryl Ball, Patricia Bills, Susan Clausen, and Jean Duffy—have been honored on this list every year since its inception.

During last month’s ArchCare Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City, CAPTRUST’s Stephen Schott was honored for his work with—and service to—Archdioceses, in general, and ArchCare, specifically.
Schott received the award from His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, at a gala that raised $1.5 million for ArchCare. In his acceptance speech, Schott shared with the audience how grateful he is to have received this honor:
“I am thankful to have the responsibility and privilege of serving and advising to investment programs for more than 100,000 active and retired Catholic priests and lay employees—as well as some of the largest Catholic foundations and missions around the country.”
Being recognized by ArchCare is the latest accolade Schott has received in 2018. He was also recognized as #5 in the Barron’s Top 50 Institutional Consultants for 2018.
At CAPTRUST, Schott is a principal and director of institutional religious retirement and foundation services, and he began his financial services career in 1984. Schott currently advises to endowments, foundations, retirement plans, captive insurance plans, Taft-Hartley plans, and public pensions.

The National Association of Plan Advisors (NAPA) announced the 2018 list of Top Retirement Plan Advisors Under 40—also known as “Young Guns” in January.
CAPTRUST’s Shaun Eskamani, John Frady, Christopher Kulick, and Andrew Shimp were among the 75 advisors named to this year’s list.
NAPA launched this list in 2014 to highlight these “Young Guns” because they “are widely seen as the future leaders of the retirement plan advisor industry.”
When asked what drew him to the advisory firm and what keeps him there, Kulick said “Culture was the most important part of the decision for me: the way the organization is structured and aligned, and the collaboration among advisors. We do not compete against each other here,” he says. “In some other organizations, it is very competitive.”

They also hold titles such as chief operating officer, chief financial officer, and chief marketing officer.
“This year’s class of C-suite winners is impressive,” says Jason Christie, publisher of Triangle Business Journal. “They represent the best of the best in corporate leadership in The Triangle. We’re proud of what they’ve accomplished, and they have set the bar for others to follow.”
On August 24, the 17 winners will be recognized at an awards luncheon at The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, North Carolina, and profiled in a special section of the Triangle Business Journal that will be published in its subscriber edition.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled. The opportunity to work at CAPTRUST inspires me and the team every day; it is truly a reflection of the hard work of so many,” Meyer stated.

April 27, 2018 (RALEIGH, N.C.) – CAPTRUST Financial Advisors (CAPTRUST), one of the nation’s leading independent wealth management and institutional investment advisory firms, is pleased to announce that seven of its advisor teams have been named among the 2018 Barron’s Top 50 Institutional Consultants. This is the publication’s fourth annual institutional consultant ranking, which recognizes the nation’s top teams specializing in investment consulting for defined contribution and defined benefit plans, and endowments and foundations.
The list is comprised of both independent and wirehouse advisory teams who are exemplary in the industry. Those named were evaluated on a range of criteria, including institutional investment assets overseen by the team, revenue generated by those assets, number of clients served by the team, and the number of team members. Advanced professional designations and professional accomplishments by the team were also taken into consideration.
The CAPTRUST teams, their lead advisors, and assets under advisement were ranked as follows:
“The key to running a successful business is to surround yourself with the smartest and most talented people—and these talented teams are just the tip of the CAPTRUST iceberg,” said CAPTRUST CEO Fielding Miller. “This recognition is a testament to their ongoing commitment to building successful practices by putting their client needs above all else. I am extremely proud and honored to work alongside these excellent advisors.”

PLANSPONSOR Magazine announced last week that CAPTRUST’s Chris Kulick was named Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year in its individual advisor category. Kulick, who works out of the firm’s Doylestown, Pennsylvania, office, joined CAPTRUST in 2010 and has worked in the financial services industry since 2001.
Each year, PLANSPONSOR Magazine conducts intensive research for their Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year awards. Starting months before the announcement of finalists and winners, PLANSPONSOR initiates a call for advisor nominees, who are then asked to complete a survey detailing their business, expertise, and more. Additional questions and interviews are used to identify winners in four categories: individual, small team, large team, and mega team.
Using information gathered during the nomination process, the researchers put together a profile for each finalist. Included in Kulick’s profile is client-specific information, such as how he has improved participants’ retirement readiness over the past year, as well as more general insights about how he views his business. When asked what he takes the most pride in as a retirement plan adviser, Kulick explained:
“I do not take it lightly that I am in a positon to affect positive change for hard working Americans—many of whom I may never meet—through the decisions made by committees and boards with whom I work. However, the best part of the job—the part I take the most satisfaction in—is when I sit down with an employee and help him or her realize their vision of retirement is possible.”
The PLANSPONSOR award is the latest accolade Kulick has earned. He was also named to the National Association of Plan Advisors’ 2017 and 2018 Top Retirement Plan Advisors Under 40 (Young Guns) list.
